Phyllanthus emblica (synonym, Emblica officinalis), commonly known as Indian gooseberry or amla, is adeciduous tree having greenish yellow fruits with six vertical stripes on them. The fruits are eaten raw orcooked, and widely used for both medicinal and culinary purposes. In Hindu myths, amla is said to haveoriginated from the drops of Amrit (referred to as drink of gods or literally means immortality), which wasspilled on earth accidentally, due to the fight between gods and demons. This religious belief makes claimsthat it almost cures every disease and is also good in extending the longevity of life.
In Ayurvedic formulations, amla is a common constituent and considered as a rejuvenating compound. Amlashampoos are traditionally believed to nourish the hair and scalp and prevent premature grey hair.
Many researchers investigated P. emblica focusing on its various pharmacological activities includinganti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-tumor, anti-ulcer, and anti-oxidant activities. It was also reported that thefruits are effective against UVB-induced photo-aging and the extract of amla promotes procollagen produc-tion and inhibits matrix metalloproteinase-1 in human skin fibroblasts.
