Plant Story

Aristotelia chilensis, commonly known as maqui or Chilean wineberry, is a small evergreen tree with small edible purple-black berries. It is native to Chile, and grows primarily in the Patagonian region of the Chilean Andes Mountains and southern Argentina. Maqui berries are 4 to 6 mm in diameter, and taste similar to blackberries, containing 4 to 8 angled seeds. Mainly grown in the wild and sold in local markets, the berries are eaten raw or processed into juices and jams. The juice has been used as a traditional medicine, as an astringent, a tonic, and for anti-diarrheal effects.

Anthocyanins, flavonoids, alkaloids, cinnamic acid derivatives, benzoic acid derivatives and other bioactive molecules have been found in maqui berry. A broad range of activities including anti-oxidant activity, inhibition of visible light-induced damage of photoreceptor cells, anti-inflammatory effects, analgesic effects, promotion of hair growth, and inhibition of lipid peroxidation are known.
