Glycine soja is defined as a synonym of Glycine max by the Plant List organization and the Encyclopedia of Life, however, many articles claim that G. soja and G. max are different species. G. soja, commonly known as wild soybean is the closest wild relative of cultivated soybean, G. max.
Wild soybean is native to East Asia but is now widely grown in the United States, Brazil and Argentina for its edible bean. The bean is a good source of protein, both for humans and as animal feed. The bean is rich in dietary fiber and variety of phytochemicals and micronutrients, including phenolics, isoflavones (especially daidzein and genistein, which are also known as phytoestrogens), phytic acid, dietary minerals, and vitamins B and K. In most of the Asian countries, soybeans are consumed mainly as tofu, soybean paste, soy milk and as soybean sprouts. Soybeans are also fermented to make ‘Meju’ in Korea, ‘Natto’ in Japan, and soy sauce in many countries.
Soybean seed extract is used in cosmetics due to its various beneficial effects on skin. Isoflavone present in soybean has been reported to have anti-oxidant activity and protect the skin from UV damage. Some of the proteins found in soybean induce skin depigmentation by reducing melanin transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes. These proteins also have anti-aging effects; they are reported to protect elastic fibers from degradation be elastase. Soybean seed extract also showed hair growth effect by stimulating hair follicular cell growth.
