Plant Story

Medicago sativa, commonly called alfalfa or lucerne, is a perennial flowering plant native to warmer temperate climates. The name “alfalfa” comes from the Arabic phrase, al-fac-facah, meaning “father of all foods.” It is estimated that alfalfa originated in south-central Asia, and was introduced to Greece, European areas, and America. Alfalfa is widely grown throughout the world as animal fodder; it is rich in protein and fiber, and gives a high yield per hectare. Alfalfa has been an important animal feed crop since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans. In recent years, alfalfa has become an increasingly popular food due to its rich nutritional value. Containing high levels of chlorophyll, carotene, protein, calcium and other vitamin and minerals, it is sometimes called a “superfood.”

Alfalfa has a long history of traditional medicine use, especially in Indian Ayurvedic texts where the seeds are prescribed for improving red blood cell production and to manage anemia. In recent studies, the plant has been reported to have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic effects. In clinical trials, alfalfa extract was reported to have a hair protection effect. The actual mechanism of action is not yet known, but high concentrations of estrogenic components in alfalfa may be the reason for engagement of the hair growth cycle.
