Cordyceps sinensis is an insect parasitizing fungus. It is called as ‘Dongchunghacho’ in Korea, meaning winter-insect and summer-plant, because of the growing process. In East Asia, C. sinensis is regarded as an invigorantand was honored as one of the three greatest invigorants together with Panax and Pilose antlers.
Having a history of hundreds of years in Traditional Oriental Medicine, C. sinensis has been generally used toimprove the conditions associated with aging and senescence. It is principally applied to treat weakness in theloins and knees, impotence and seminal emission, hyposexuality, fatigue, night sweating, and other conditionsrelated to aging.

Although the pharmacologically active components of C. sinensis are still unresolved, it is reported that C.sinensis contains cordycepin, cordycepic acid, cordymin, and polysaccharides as active ingredients. Thesebioactive compounds have been reported to be beneficial for the prevention and the treatment of respiratorydisease, renal dysfunction, hyposexuality, and cancers.

The pharmacological actions of C. sinensis have been studied in a number of scientific researches, and reportedto have bioactivities including anti-tumor, anti-metastatic, anti-oxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory,insecticidal, anti-microbial, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, anti-aging, neuroprotective, renoprotective effects, etc.
