Hyssopus officinalis is a perennial bushy herb, native to southern Europe, but widely cultivated elsewhere. Commonly known as hyssop, the name is of Greek origin, derived from the use of the herb to cleanse sacred places. Hyssop flowers were traditionally used as a bookmark in psalm books during church services. The flower tops are edible, and were used as a culinary herb in salads, broths and as decoration. A tisane of hyssop made with honey was used for upper respiratory disorders. Western herbalists use hyssop for coughs and colds, respiratory infections and to ease tension.
It has been studied and known that it has anti-oxidant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effect.
