Prunus persica is a deciduous tree which bears edible juicy fruit also called a peach. The plant is native to China belonging to the genus Prunus which includes cherry and plum, in the family Rosaceae. The pink flowers with five petals are produced in early spring before the leaves. The fruits have yellow or white flesh, a delicate aroma, and skin that is either velvety or smooth in different cultivars. Peach was brought to India and Western Asia in ancient times.
Peach fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals as well as phenolic compounds. The major phenolic compounds identified in peach are chlorogenic acid, catechin, epicatechin, gallic acid, procyanidin B1, B3 and so on. It was reported that the peach fruits exhibited anti-oxidant and anti-allergic inflammatory activities.
