Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly called bigleaf hydrangea, French hydrangea, and lacecap hydrangea, is widely grown in the southern part of Korea, especially on Jeju Island. Thanks to the mild weather and abundant water, Jeju Island is considered the best region to grow hydrangea. In early summer, it is widely blooming in Jeju, and the island is crowded with people visiting to see the flowers. In Korean history, this plant was frequently used to treat fever as folk medicine. Recent studies revealed its anti-inflammatory effect by reducing the inflammation mediators such as NO, PGE2, and TNF-α. Also, it is revealed that hydrangenol, the most well-known active compound of hydrangea, remarkably inhibited iNOS in cells. Reflecting on these studies, our Jeju Hydrangea showed strong anti-inflammatory activities.
