Swertia japonica, a biennial plant belonging to the Gentianaceae family, is a Japanese folk medicine used for a long time to treat gastrointestinal diseases including nausea, gastroparesis, and gastric atony as a bitter stomachic. It is native to and distributed in Korea, China, and Japan. Several components of S. japonica were identified, including secoiridoids, phenyl glucosides, flavonoids, and xanthones. Among them, swertiamarin, a secoiridoid glycoside, is known to be a representative constituent of this plant. Many pharmaceutical activities of swertiamarin were reported, such as anti-bacterial, hepatoprotective, and anti-arthritic activities. Swertiamarin also exhibited an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibition of NF-κB/IκB and JAK2/STAT3 signaling. In this study, swertiamarin reduced the expression levels of MMP-9, iNOS, PGE2, and COX-2 in adjuvant-induced animals.
